tax / duty / tariff 都被翻译成「税」，但有区别。
含义上的区别
一句话概括：tax 是税的总称，duty / tariff 是 tax 的两个种类。
tax
Tax is an amount of money that you have to pay to the government so that it can pay forpublic services.
tax 是税的总称，你把 tax 付给政府，政府再用来公众建设，就是常说的「取之于民，用之于民」。
duty
a tax that you pay on things that you buy especially those that you bring into a country
你购买商品时需要支付的税被称为 duty，尤其是在国外购买带到国内的商品。
这也就是为什么机场的「免税商店」对应的英文是 duty-free shop。
tariff
很容易误拼成tarrif
A tariff is a tax that a government collects on goods coming into a country.
tariff 特指政府对进口货物征收的税。
duty vs tariff
duty 和 tariff 都被翻译成「关税」，有时候的确可以通用，但区别大致如下：
在谈论「税率」的时候，更倾向用 tariff： The tariff is 15% of the total cost;在谈论具体「税费」的时候，更倾向用 duty：a duty of $1000.
某一些习惯的说法不能轻易改变。比如：上文提到的 duty-free shop;又比如「关税壁垒」，tariff barrier。
